Senator Herb Kohl's response to the Abolishment Form.

Wisconsin
Dear Mr. G
Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns with me. I value the correspondence from people in Wisconsin, and would like to take this opportunity to address your concerns.
I do not want to see taxes rise. Being a businessman, I know what a burden taxes already are. Taxes profoundly affect everyone and I believe that American families -- especially middle and lower income families -- are bearing a greater and greater share of the tax burden in this country. I am in favor of legislation which lowers the tax burdens on families who work hard everyday to support themselves and their communities.
Furthermore, I believe that another important way Congress can help American families is to get our budget deficit under control. The deficit eats at our domestic savings, it props up interest rates, and we simply cannot afford to wait any longer to deal with it. For this reason, in the past I have supported a number of measures that have helped fight the deficit.
I would like to emphasize that I am very open to proposals aimed at encouraging investment and savings. However, I believe we must balance any additional tax proposals against our urgent security spending needs and rising deficits. We cannot think about cutting corners in our military operations, and we cannot risk damaging consumer confidence by repealing promised and anticipated tax cuts. Likewise, this is not the time to embark on unnecessary new tax or spending programs that represent a long- term drain on the treasury.
It is my hope that we can accomplish these policy goals while simultaneously simplifying the process. Again, thank you for contacting me. I appreciate knowing your thoughts on this issue.
Sincerely,
Herb Kohl U.S. Senator
